Touhou 12.8: Great Fairy Wars 8 October 2010
Finally got around to play Fairy Wars and I must say it is pretty hard (in before, secondaries). I finished it on Normal yesterday after I found out you can actually freeze bullets with W by unleashing a chain reaction when near a bullet, making the difficulty more bearable. Although I’m sure there are other mechanisms I haven’t found out about yet, I should probably read… the manual.
It’s a nice little mechanism that brings new variety to the ZUN danmaku formula. However, this mechanism has the drawback that it’s hard to use because it requires good timing: in danmaku you usually don’t have time to charge attacks. This is why I think the game seems a bit harder than usual (at least, to me) because when you get the hang of the ice blast technique you instantly get rid of all the bullets on-screen (except for those irritating fire balls). There’s still room to improve though, it’s only a matter of time and learning the patterns now. On another note, I’m also liking the change of in-game art, as this improves even further the quality of ZUN’s games, which was one of my pet peeves. Sorry, ZUN, you simply can’t draw beautiful art in my eyes.
Although ZUN says this extra stage theme was rushed I feel it’s the one I like the most.
In the end, playing with everyone’s favorite idiot strongest fairy was quite nice and this could be one of the funnest Touhou games yet but I still keep Imperishable Night in my heart.
Kishida Kyoudan & The Akeboshi Rockets 29 September 2010
They’re on everyone’s mouths. If you are a /jp/ regular or if you’ve been listening to the /jp/ radio, you’ve probably heard Kishida Kyoudan & The Akeboshi Rockets (岸田教団&THE明星ロケッツ). Some Anons and myself have been uploading and requesting their songs from time to time. If you haven’t, you certainly heard the opening song of the recent Highschool of the Dead.
I first got a hold of them when their Hoshizora Logic album got linked on a thread for C73 releases. Quickly thereafter, I found about Gensou Jihen released at Reitaisai 4 months before and I fell in love. K-Kyoudan apparently hit the jackpot when they did the OP for HOTD even though they were quite popular already, they did a Literal World Tour in 2009 and opened the 2009 Flowering Night (a yearly Touhou live concert starring some of the best bands) where they’ve been a regular band since ’07.
In my opinion however their success is totally deserved. Catchy riffs all over the place and a lead vocal that sticks in your head – Ichigo’s the name. Kishida/Kisida (bassist) did some solo material but his work has far more impact when combined with The Akeboshi Rockets and Ichigo. Occasionally the group departs from the Touhou-centric music and brings us some original songs of their own that manage to shine through ZUN’s productions and are a reminder of their great talent, although the recent Rolling ★ Star comes back to the roots. Enjoy.
Tips for God Hand 28 September 2010
I thought I just put some tips for God Hand in here. Could be useful for someone one day. If you haven’t played this CURAZY game, you need to do so as soon as possible.
Here’s some music for you while you read.
- Backflip whenever you can.
- Never use your Godhand unless a demon pops out. Save it specifically for them so you can just woop their asses and get the technique they usually drop.
- Dash attacks are really helpful to escape and get comfortable or to rush an enemy. They’re especially good to use on weaker enemies that get knocked down by such attacks.
- The first 3 or 4 hits of your combo should be fast attacks, the last ones should be more powerful. This is because you will usually never have time to properly finish off a combo, but when you pull out the Godhand you will appreciate having those super damaging moves in your combo.
- Do a couple of quick hits, then be ready to do a guard breaking move. Enemies will troll you with blocking, especially later in the game.
- Don’t sell techniques. If you sell a technique because you don’t want it, next time you fight a demon you could just end up with that same technique again. It won’t give you a technique you already have.
- When you are fighting a boss, use your Godhand first, then use up your roulette attacks to regain your lost Godhand meter. Chain Yanker is really good at rebuilding your meter.
- If you’re desperate for cash, save then gamble, if you win a lot of money save and continue, if you lose a lot of money reload to when you had money. Dog races are the safest gambling bet.
- The more enemies you have to fight at once, the worse. Try to lure single enemies away from the group and deal with them alone.
- Backflip. Backflip. Backflip every, single, time.
MA.S ATTACK 27 September 2010
Let me tell you about this doujin group called MA.S ATTACK composed of six NEETs. MA.SA has been around since 2006, that is when they released their first album called 「Countdown to RED」 and like every doujin group that respects itself, MA.SA is greatly influenced by Touhou.
MA.S ATTACK – 妖怪宇宙旅行(「Never Silence」)
They are a group that like to experiment and thus they’re not easily classifiable. They go from very fast and upbeat songs to ambient or trance songs. Drawn Drones Drown Drone was released this year at C78 as a mini album and it showed again great ambient songs.
MA.S ATTACK – ハルトマンの妖怪少女 (「DDDD」)
If you care to listen long enough, you’ll soon be rewarded when you least expect it.
Let’s not forget to add a link to their site:
You can download some of their stuff there as well.
It was bound to happen… 26 September 2010
This is the first post and I just felt like leaving you with a nice song:
On a side note, long live the King of All Cosmos.
